Escape the Survival Trap: From Chaotic Business Controls to Scalability
Are you one of those business owners who are 24 hours in ‘survival mode’. Putting in so many hours, yet the struggle to earn a profit is real? From what it sounds, you are stressing yourself too much to run a business instead of developing strategies. In this article, I will help you move one essential step closer to a day and age where the business is self-sufficient and can work irrespective of your presence mentality.
More often than not, each business starts as a ‘passion’, a ‘diary’ of dreams that any individual wishes to fulfill. There comes a time when the company stands as a core input and everything starts to link together at that stage.
For example; the same baker that everyone knows for selling multiple types of bread, chicken and so much more. If we think about it economically, this reliance creates a sense of dependence resulting in an unyielding system.
Let’s now speak about the transition for a second. Imagine a time where you could owe multiple bakeries with endless opportunities?
A world so different than the real one and the first step towards that would be thinking differently. This is all about setting boundaries and strategies and this right here is the change in perception you have been in search of. Ravi was then able to build strong foundations thanks to everything aligning together perfectly, he was able to develop his dream of building a scalable enterprise into a reality. Do not stall and get going.
The Death Spiral: Recognizing Your Business Constraints
Unfortunately, a number of obstacles hinder progress forcing some companies into a ‘surviving’ mode: It’s akin to dealing with manholes on the highway to success. Now let’s take a look at a few of these road blockers.
- Market Forces: Are margins so narrow that you are perpetually struggling with cashflows?
- Over-Due Receivables: Are you focusing on whatever’s overdue instead of how best to grow and expand?
- Volatile Sales: Are your sales highly cyclical with slighting changes impacting them? Owner’s Structure: If you’re out of the office, does the rest of the stuff get delayed? Systems Dependence: Simplistic or, with lack of processes leads to inconsistencies and inefficiencies.
Such interrelated questions can be a headache indeed, however, once there is an order, it becomes easier to solve the tasks set.
Survival and growth are two sides of the same coin, working hard towards achieving the goal cannot be the only option. Change is based on three key aspects: Trying to change the tide without first realising these initial truths is risky and at times reckless.
- Aiming to be the Best: Do you have a target in mind for the next 5 years? Where do you envision your business? Focus on the big picture first and think about the details later. This is what you need. Remember this, it’s what gives you a competitive edge.
- Be Confident: Make it happen. You may be tempted to put money in a new system, or staff on the ground, but ultimately your company has to grow. You need to take that risk. While it seems a gamble, if played right it offers bonuses.
- Capability: Invest in yourself and your team’s skill development. Financial management or negotiation, we always have to learn to grow and be successful.
A firm change in mindset is absolutely necessary for this method to work. You are not only involved in the practice but now you are working on it. You are building a business which can stand on its own and can expand. You need to perfect seven functions: Leadership & Management, Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance, Innovation & R&D, HR – every one of them is critical for the healthy performance of the business.
